| Increasing the fees is needless and has no benefits. What you end up with is, indeed, people put of going to higher education because of the high level of debt the will have to pay off over many years. Considering that the more you earn the more tax you pay then it is logical to expect university education to be paid from working people's taxes as many top earners are graduates. A higher level of education in the UK will and does let us punch above our weight. We have some of the best scientists, engineers, artists and general thinkers in the world and it really does more than pay for it's self. In many cases the money isn't new money spent but money saved from social security anyway. Many young who don't go to university would be on the dole, so we'd have to pay for them anyway! Anyway if they don't pay upfront then we're still not saving any money for at least 4 years anyway! So what's the point? There are things we can and should cut first and I can't help that there is also a growing movement to try and reinvent the way our economy is run in this country - after all we spend as much on interest on our national debts as we do on transport and law and order put together. |
