| This problem suits this government. Who would Braverman be if she didn't have the "invasion of asylum seekers" drum to bang? It is a so called "wedge issue", to play to the worst in us. A government devoid of pilicies has to create problems to distract. There are solutions: 1. Increase processing speed and capability within the UK, so that applications can be dealt with in days rather than months or years. 2. Set up processing facilities in France, so that those entitled to asylum can be granted it and admitted into the UK in an orderly way. Better still, in Turkey and Pakistan so that Syrian and Afghani refugees can be dealt with close to the countries they are fleeing. 3. Set up a proper, and easy to use seasonal workers' scheme, so that farmers get the labour they need. There are answers. They have been put forward often. The fact that the government does not adopt them indicates that they don't want to, because the present situation suits their political aims. |
