I don't think Tom is advocating for that - but I'm sure he can clarify himself. I think you are highlighting that there are different types of LTN arrangements - some based on ANPR cameras, some on physical barriers, some ban all traffic and some provide exceptions to local residents. Indeed, the use of ANPR cameras rather than hard barriers is designed so that they don't inconvenience residents or impede emergency vehicles. The main aim is to prevent through traffic and that doesn't necessarily have to be with a one size fits all solution. I agree, though, that this kind of "postcode discrimination" can appear unfair, especially to some people on the boundaries. However, that's a long way from the 1960s deep south racism you refer to with the water fountains or other deliberately discriminatory policies. If we go down the discrimination line, isn't it also discriminatory to allow those in pre-2019 LTNs to keep their benefits but deny them to others? If you are arguing for fairness, why are you not arguing to remove all traffic restrictions from all roads? Not that anyone in The OC who lives in a pre-2019 LTN would see it as a benefit, as living in one leaves "residents stranded and isolated, and leading to a loss of independence and mental health issues" (according to The OC website). |
