So many of the new local arrangements are just too confusing and 'virtual'. As others have suggested, to be effective, a road closure needs a lump of timber or concrete across it, or a tastefully landscaped version of the same. So often our new road closures aren't actually closed at all. They're left wide open, albeit with a couple of flying motorbike signs, with various sophisticated but unobtrusive camera installation to provide enforcement. In fact all they do is provide income, as they do little to actually control the traffic flow. At Fisher Lane they can't even be bothered to change the road markings to reflect the new restrictions, with the old redundant mini-roundabout still there on the Ealing side, and the old, now misleading road markings still on the Hounslow side. At least Devonshire Road has a couple of planters in the road to give people a hint that something has changed. In some 'restaurant' streets in the West End, they just pull a barrier across in the evening and take it away during the day and there's no doubt what's intended. Meanwhile our local 'school closures' rely on secret cameras with no physical barriers, potentially creating more confusion and danger than before. |
