| When I went with Sam Hearn to Waltham Forest we visited Orford Road which Michael mentions further down this thread. The Council had implemented access restrictions a few years before. One of the traders led a long campaign against the closure to cars culminating in a protest with 300 people following a coffin down the street to symbolise the death of the street and shops. Our guide told us that trader had privately approached him a couple of years after the closure to admit that he had got it totally wrong and that his business and the others were thriving. It is a lovely road with bustling cafes and shops and a piazza at the top where there used to be a busy junction. |
