Anita, It is important not to overstate the importance of driving to shops in an urban area like Chiswick. A survey done by the council a few years ago found that only 8% of shoppers on CHR had driven there. It was 18% in the recent Chiswick Flower Market survey (which was self reported, not a random sample) You say that people driving spend more per visit and surveys have found that. However people driving make fewer visits so their overall spend per month is less than people using other modes of transport. Another survey done for Chiswick Flower Market found that the peak turnover of cars in the parking area outside the George IV was about 45 cars per hour. At typical London occupancy levels that is about 60 people per hour. Pre-COVID, that is less than the capacity of one bus and even post-COVID, it is just a few buses. That’s really a tiny number of people for such a large space. People think that lots of people come by car because so much space is taken up by cars both in the roads and for parking. But the reality is that cars are such an inefficient use of space that it really isn’t that many people. There is little chance of substantially increasing footfall by increasing numbers of people driving, far better to focus on modes of transport that can actually support more people and reallocate road space to attract more people. |
