Michael, you missed what was the key point about Anita's post that concerning the importance of the customer at the margin once you have reached breakeven point. If you haven't run a business the concept may be unfamiliar to you but imagine for a moment you were running a business that suddenly became unable to sell anything to left handed people. You might think that is no big deal because most of your customers are right handed but it is likely that all of your profits would be gone because the lost business comes straight off the bottom line. Anita is aware that cars bring a small proportion of trade for most Chiswick businesses - she mentions the fact. It is not a shopping destination for people outside the area because of the parking issue. The exception to that is Sainsbury's which a local shop owner told me makes more sales in a day than every other shop in Chiswick put together and is Sainsbury's highest turnover store per square foot in the entire country. I wonder what it could be about Sainsbury's that makes this so. |
