| I suspect that to think that few Brexit supporters really care about the democracy or sovereignty of the UK. The notion of 'take back control' and the shouting about sovereignty was actually short hand for a desire to halt a perceived imposing of anything from any legislative body that was not English. So the actual percentage of legislation coming from the EU that impacting the UK is not important. The chaos and shortcomings of the UK parliamentary process or constitution (or lack of) is not important. And our PM riding rough shod over process, procedure and even the law is not important. Clearly if a johnny foreigner had even whispered a suggestion of such behaviour that is different; there would a self-righteous outcry. But when our own dodgy government does these things - then that is ok. This highlights a core aspect of Brexit. The Brexit fan and the Brexit messaging is not looking for a better standard, or better governance, or any tangible improvement. It is not about achieving a great UK. It is, at its core, about sticking one to johnny foreigner. |
