| My mail exchange earlier with Rupa Huq following my emsil to her asking her to support this latest deal in interests of the UK economy and jobs:- Meant to say that Caroline Flint is to me a model of what a Labour MP should be. Displays bravery, common sense, pragmatism and an understanding of the need to prevent the destruction of business and jobs together with compassion for the poor. And a sensible attitude towards Brexit and this deal. It is a great pity more Labour MPs don’t follow her example. If they did, Labour might have a chance of winning the next election. On present form, they won’t. It is up to future UK governments to ensure that legislation is in place to protect our rights. Much of our current legislation, such as the minimum wage, surpasses anything in place in the EU (see below). Do you not believe enough in Labour to think that if the Tories tried to slash any rights, human or animal, they would still not get in in a future election? I am afraid you are simply parroting you extreme left leader who most people would not vote for and who gives every impression of hating this country. Labour is not in tune with the mood of the country, and no, you do not know better than the electorate. This deal marks the beginning of the end to the personal and business uncertainty that is destroying this country. I am sorry you seem happy to participate, like the Labour leader, in the destruction of this great and creative nation. That is not what I expect from those who are supposed to represent me. Could you tell me if this tweet that is currently doing the rounds is factually incorrect? In addition we will be able to stop the appalling shipment of live animals that causes horrendous and wicked suffering. What is it that @UKLabour are trying protect? 🇬🇧 Sick Pay: 28 weeks 🇪🇺 : None set 🇬🇧 Holiday Pay: 5.6 weeks 🇪🇺 : 4 weeks 🇬🇧 Maternity Pay: 52 weeks 🇪🇺 : 14 weeks 🇬🇧 Minimum Wage: £8.21 soon be be £10.50 🇪🇺 : None set https://pic.twitter.com/bF3PrJpAXM I look forward to your reply. On Saturday I voted with the vast majority of my Labour colleagues to pass the Letwin amendment, withholding support for Johnson’s deal until MPs have had a chance to scrutinise the full legislation. This means that, despite his insistence on delivering Brexit “do or die” by the end of the month, Johnson has sent a letter to the EU requesting a three-month extension to Article 50. As a result, Johnson’s deal fell on Saturday and was not voted on by MPs. If it comes before the House again, I will be voting against this deal because it is a Sell Out Deal – selling out our economy, our manufacturing base and people’s jobs – and paves the way for a sell-off of our NHS and other public services too. It does away with important workers’ rights protections and environmental standards. There is a difference between getting Brexit done and getting Brexit right, as I argued on Sky News last weekend: https://twitter.com/RupaHuq/status/1185853734892507136. Rather than strengthening the political declaration along the lines Labour has repeatedly called for – including a new Customs Union, single market alignment and robust protections for rights and security – Johnson has set a course for deregulation, slashing rights and a more distant economic relationship. Labour has always been clear that we will not support a flawed Brexit deal that harms jobs, rights and living standards. This deal will unquestionably do that. Johnson has exacerbated the rot that set into our politics and society ever since Cameron called the 2016 referendum. We have seen jobs and investment leaving our shores, the UK diminished on the international stage to a laughing stock, the pound plummeting and hate crime up for starters. Then there’s the complete disrespect and disregard for democracy displayed as our unwritten constitution has been played with fast and loose to avoid Parliamentary scrutiny. In 2015 at the last scheduled election the issues of the day on the doorstep were NHS closures and the housing crisis. We had lost the Accident and Emergency departments of Hammersmith and Central Middlesex hospitals with the sword of Damocles hanging over Ealing and Charing Cross. Not a single voter raised the EU as an issue of all the hundreds of doorstep conversations I had. Now the Brexit bottle has been uncorked, the referendum-induced pandora’s box opened, we will never be able to contain the demons unleashed and simply revert to things as they were. I appreciate that this is a frustrating time, but please be assured that I am committed to delivering the best outcome for the future prosperity of the UK. Let’s move forward from this intractable stalemate with a people’s vote and then a general election to reset the direction that this country is going in. Only then can we end this nightmare. Thank you again for your email and please let me know if you have any further questions on this or any other issue. Kind regards, Rupa Rupa Huq MP Ealing Central & Acton |
