| I don’t doubt their veracity in the slightest, as I said, that they exceed EU standards rather proves my point that 1) we are not controlled by an all powerful dictatorial EU and 2) The EU *minimum* standards are absolutely necessary to prevent a hard right Tory government from slashing regulations in a race to the bottom in pursuit of some putative FTA with the likes of America, or in an attempt to create Singapore-on-Thames, or, in the wilder fantasies of the ERG, a hellish combination of both. Future governments can’t be bound by their predecessors, therefore the only way to prevent some horror show merry go round of regulation/deregulation on a 5 year cycle is membership of a supranational body that mandates minimum standards which we’re free to improve on, something that your email rather nicely illustrates: why membership of the EU is so important. |
