| Anyone who repeats the meaningless mantra "Get it done" should be required to explain what "it" means. "It" is not only the withdrawal agreement. "It" is also the new trading agreement with the EU. The draft Without Bill provides for us to crash out of the transitional arrangements under the withdrawal agreement at the end of the "Implementation Period" I.e. 31 December 2020. So all Johnson's deal is is "No deal" by the back door. Which is what he wanted until prevented from crashing out next week by the Benn Act. So he quickly cobbled together a "solution" to the Irish border issue by moving the border into the Irish Sea (exactly what he swore he would never do a month ago, and the offer rejected by May two years ago - so no great negotiating triumph there). Now threatening to withdraw the Bill if the timetable to consider the 110 pages of complicated legislation within three days is not approved is childish, bullying, anti democratic, and beyond outrageous. So much for "dictatorship from Brussels" (which was always a big lie, mainly of Johnson's own making when he was the Times correspondent before being sacked for lying and the the Telegraph correspondent). We now have someone trying to create a real dictatorship on our own doorstep. |
