| As others have suggested, even if the 'let's get Brexit done' deal was voted through, it would be but the start of a long process of negotiating the specifics of whatever future relationships with the EU Boris and his friends have in mind. And it's clear that his deal has sneakily removed several 'regulatory alignment' obligations and left them to be sorted out/done away with at some future date. Why else would the ERG suddenly agreed to support the deal? Conversely, the DUP have been sold out as their support is no longer critical. As for Johnson's destructive and perverse behaviour, an alternative interpretation is that it's entirely intentional, and successive defeats in parliament and in the courts all serve to burnish his image as the 'man of the people', pitched against the elite establishment 'enemy', determined to stop him, by 'sabotage', 'surrender' and 'collaboration', from delivering his golden unicorn-infested future for Britain - or possibly just, er, England. We all know that this kind of populism, fuelled by untruth and exaggeration, is the classic strategy of the despot and dictator who, in reality, just wants unfettered personal power to reshape society according to his whim. The real tragedy is that so many people fall for this and are even fooled into supporting it at the ballot box - at least until that option is no longer available. |
