| Just think if we still had the old London Bridge with its buildings lining the road, how much of an argument would be going on about its usage. No-one thought about "listing" it in 1761 when the buildings were demolished or in 1831 when it was decided it was life-expired and a new structure was needed, or in 1967 when that structure was replaced by the current bridge. Interesting to note that in 1831 the new approach roads cost three times as much as the bridge itself. I wonder what the cost would be for new approach roads and a tunnel under the river at Hammersmith, leaving the current bridge in situ ? |
