| Sir Joseph Bazelgette designed and built Hammersmith Bridge constructed in 1887. It replaced an earlier bridge constructed in 1827. Bazalgette also designed and built Battersea Bridge (1890) replacing an old wooden bridge. He also rebuilt Putney Bridge (1867). The point of the history lesson is that bridges have a finite life and eventually need replacing or rebuilding. Bazalgette would be impressed that his bridge had served for so long but aghast at the incompetence of present day politicians. There is a reason that the senior priest in ancient Rome held the title of Pontifex Maximus. |
