It's a bit confusing to describe the available data as being for traffic as this can be misleading. If road speeds reduce, congestion can still increase while the number of journeys falls. Therefore, the reduced number of crossings on some of the bridges over the Thames may not equate to reduced traffic in the way that is generally understood. Interpreting the data here is quite complex and, while you maybe right to be sceptical about claims from motorists that their journey times have significantly increased since Hammersmith Bridge closed, you also can't make categorical claims based on the numbers we have. It will hopefully be the case that a comprehensive analysis of traffic patterns will be done before the decision is made whether or not to go ahead with the reopening of Hammersmith Bridge. I would anticipate the government would be delighted if a strong case could be made that changes in traffic patterns meant that the investment was no longer justified. |
