The argument for it to fully reopen is significantly weakened if it doesn't carry buses. One of the main problems with the closure was that there was a substantial public transport desert in the Barnes area created when local bus services couldn't cross the river. Tom and Michael do raise an interesting point that neither the contractors or the council have not confirmed in writing that the piling analysis, the results of which should have been published last year, categorically confirmed there was no issue. However, they have both verbally said that the structure was sound. It may be wishful thinking on their part that there is a question mark over the bridge's underlying structural integrity. It would be on nobody's interest to suppress that information and there is no way that the government would even consider putting money towards a reopening if there was any doubt. |
