People in Ealing had enormous standard sized wheelie bins dumped on them and had to fight for smaller ones in particular because the Council said they did not exist when they could be seen to be.  This is a joke considering we should be trying to reduce our waste - Refuse Reduce Reuse Repurpose Recycle etc.

In other towns they started with larger bins and then issued smaller ones as residents got used to the amount of waste they made - and also reduced it.  They are difficult to manoeuvre and swapping them around to have the correct one accessible for the next collection is difficult with little space.  They are not supposed to be on the pavements blocking them and there have been occasions when residents have had access and exit from their homes blocked.

There are problems when landlords do not provide adequate bin space or when this has been provided for planning permission it is later altered and reduced. This can be a health and safety issue.  Estate Agents move wheelie bins so they do not appear in photographs. One solution or size does not suit all homes.

Unfortunately many residents do not bother to use or make best use of the recycling and waste facilities provided at the expense of us all in our Council Tax.   All Councils now have 24/7 websites with information and containers can be ordered there.  In Hounslow there are nets available for the boxes and ways to stack them so that recycling isn't blown around.  Packets eg cereal ones are designed to be flattened - just undo the bottom.  Cans can be crushed or half crushed to make more space and to stop them from rolling.  Tetrapaks rinsed, flattened and lids replaced.  All packaging should be empty!

Using the food waste bins stops the plastic wheelie bins stinking and shows you what exactly you are wasting and allows you to adjust your buying, storing, cooking and eating habits to reduce hour food waste.  We waste a tremendous amount of food in the UK.  www.lovefoodhatewaste.     is very useful.

Check out your Council website:  www.ealing.gov.uk   www.hounslow.gov.uk.  etc
Also check out our Joint Waste Authority:  West London Waste Authority for lots of info on reducing waste and what is happening in the area re bulky waste.  You can also ask them to come and give a talk to your local community/group.

If you are still stuck your local Councillors are there to help.  You can find them online as well as in the local magazines.

Remember that Business Waste is different and is not included in Council Tax.

There is no Waste Fairy who magics your waste 'away' but with a bit of effort the situation can be easier and improved.  The other man's grass is not always greener.
