| Having been to climate protests over the last week I'd like to clarify a few of the misconceptions on this thread. There was a wide range of people taking part in the protest, I met teachers, lawyers, NHS workers, students, retired people, parents terrified what sort of world their children would have to grow up in. Basically, it was a broad representation of members of our society. Regarding the necessity for disruption, there have been 'legal' organised marches for years which received absolutely no media coverage or had any impact. We have tried mailing our political representatives signed countless petitions and are seeing no significant action to reduce carbon emissions at the rate necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change. Only a handful of politicians turned up at the recent parliament debate on climate change. Ruth Cadbury, my local MP didn't show up saying she had more important things to do. People are willing to risk getting a criminal record and risk their careers to allow our message to be heard because they want a future in this world for them and their families. Please watch the David Attenborough program aired this week to learn more about climate facts and know that the next few years are the last chance we have of limiting warming to 1.5c. Last years hot summer is nothing compared to what will happen if we don't act now. Look at the floods in Mozambique, Miami and the American mid-west, the wildfires raging through California and countless other examples which are happening right now. I want a world that our children can live in and the minor disruptions that people faced over the last week are nothing in comparison with what will happen if urgent action isn't taken. |
