I must admit that when I started this thread I was sitting on the fence so I find all the comments quite interesting. However, after seeing it all on the news and listening to the views of the protesters, I am in sympathy with them. They seem like decent, well educated people fighting desperately to have the government listen to the fact that we are destroying this planet and time is running out. A great many of these people, according to reports, have taken two weeks annual vacation to support the cause. The inconvenience to some people and loss of revenue to retailers and businesses seems totally insignificant to the bigger picture of saving the planet. Clearly the governments baseline of 2050 to start the process is not good enough. Extinction's baseline of implementation by 2025 is quite ambitious but at least it's a good kick-off to get things moving. If there is no pressure, governments will just sit back! Nobody has had the guts to tackle TfL for closing Hammersmith Bridge indefinitely so what is the big deal about closing Waterloo Bridge for a couple of weeks if it is for a good cause? Some have questioned the high emissions due to traffic congestion caused by the protesters. So what? It is temporary and people should look at the bigger picture of the long term future for the planet. Surely a little inconvenience and financial hardship for a couple of weeks is worth it if the message gets across and politicians have the courage to act? I congratulate the organisers and participants of the rebellion. Well done - keep up the excellent work! |
