| Meanwhile back in the real world Hounslow Council continues to construct housing with Hobson's choice of gas central heating and gas cookers. Experience in other local authorities has apparently shown that social housing tenants do not understand how to operate more planet friendly heating sources e.g. air source or ground source heat pumps, district heating and electric cookers. Really? So we just take the easy option. What would it cost to try a pilot project? Obsolete housing stock with solid wall construction is eventually refurbished (with gas central heating) but not brought up to the standard of modern homes. In the short run this is cheaper. In the long-run we all suffer. Those of us with longer memories will recall the innovative proposal by Hounslow Homes to install solar panels (photo-voltaics) on all of Hounslow's large blocks of flats. This idea was snuffed out at birth and it was Hounslow Homes that went extinct. Meanwhile all across the Borough either through ignorance or stupidity residents concrete over their front drive ways and gardens and do not comply with the sustained urban draining (SUDS) specification. As sea levels rise and rainfall becomes heavier we MUST find ways of soaking up as much rainwater as possible otherwise areas at risk of flooding (including much of Chiswick) will face a day of reckoning. Within half a mile of my own home there is house owned by Hounslow Housing where the driveway was concreted over in the last five years. |
