Hounslow's contractors butchered the Duke's Avenue limes in high summer last year. The trees looked ridiculous afterwards, with lots of new growth on the trunk and bald tops with mop-headed protuberances. Challenged, the Council said, if I remember correctly, that they couldn't do it before the trees came into full leaf, because they had to prune the plane trees first, as the flowers and the hairs on the fruits represent a health hazard to the contractors' staff. In my view the butchering of trees in this way is unjustifiable at any time of year - not only does it rob the trees of their natural appearance, but it renders them susceptible to pests and diseases. The pruning should be confined to removal of dead wood and dangerous overhanging branches, and the various Councils should allow us to enjoy the glories of Chiswick's trees. |
