Fraser You are clearly strongly opposed to the EU, and most of your arguments (like the other sceptics here) are about the EU in general, rather than the Lisbon Treaty. You're entitled to your opinion, and you've clearly researched things deeply, but I beg to differ. You argue that Switzerland and Norway don't do too badly. Norway is a bit of a special case, a very small country with lots of oil. Compared with Switzerland, the UK has done rather well: according to a quick Google search our GDP per capita in 1991 was 49% of Switzerland's. In 2007 it was nearly 92%, so relative to them our national product per head has practically doubled in 16 years. We're financially well off where we are, quite apart from our opportunity to participate as a key player in one of the 4 or 5 eco-political blocs that matter in the world. The sooner we put our foreign policy in with the EU the better, we could stop wasting lives and money on Middle Eastern adventures and pointless nuclear weapons. |
