Your concept of this debate sounds like the nirvana of democracy. All the voters in the country listen carefully to the complicated issues on both side of the argument. Then they wisely weigh up the pros and cons and soberly judge which choice would be best for the country. We all know this is not what would happen. The vast majority of voters in the UK receive their information from sources that have no intention of going into any more depth than is necessary to support the views of the medium proprietor / editorial team. There will be much talk of straight bananas, MEPs on the gravy train, banning British sausages, corrupt officials, Polish migrants living 20 to a room, British hauliers not given a level playing field etc etc. The actual question on the referendum would become almost irrelevant as most voters would simply be using the opportunity to endorse or reject the concept of an organisation where we have to compromise our traditions and sovereignty to enable us to live effectively with our neighbours. It was weak leadership in the Labour party that allowed the referendum for the constitution - it would be weaker still to cave in on the treaty. |
