Jonathan has perhaps accidentally got to the heart of the matter with his throw away line "Its normal for taxes to be collected and distributed". Parliament's historic role is to call the executive arm of government to account and to approve (or not) on our behalf the plans to tax and spend. The principles behind the new constitution are too important to be handed over to party politicians with their own grubby self serving agendas e.g. if I support this bill will Gordon promote me? Yes Jonathan Britain is and probably will always actually be run by faceless bureaucrats but that is not what Parliament is for. Parliment should be a check and control on the Executive. What we have with the EU is taxation without effective representation. Will the new constitution reduce the democratic deficit at the heart of EU governance? Will the activities of the Commission be brought under proper democratic control? These are issues that need debating. |
