Given the Lisbon Treaty is the latest stage in 'ever closer union' though, it's perfectly legitimate to debate the EU and its treaty offspring. To do otherwise would be like trying to separate an omelette from its eggs. Remember too that Lisbon is deliberately confusing in order to neuter easy analysis and debate. It's designed to steer discussion back to the EU and away from the treaty (300-odd pages of text tacked onto 3,000 or so existing pages). Lisbon simply brings the bigger issues back into focus. |
