The reason is that Lira was a crackpot who went to live in a country and then justified the invasion of his host country, denied well documented cases of atrocities by the Russians, insulted soldiers defending their country and allegedly acted as a spotter for Russian missile attacks on Kharkiv. The Ukrainians, understandably arrested him but then bailed him, and then arrested him again when he tried to flee the country. If they had decided to execute him, they would have been well within their rights but he died of pneumonia. Why on earth should any of us care what happened to this man? On the other hand Navalny bravely stood up against corruption in his own country and saw his associates murdered and an attempt made to kill him. Despite this he returned to Russia, aware that he probably would be killed to stand up for what he believed in. There is no comparison between the two men, Lira is not fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Navalny. |
