| "I say to all those that protest about Palestine did you do the same for Ukraine? " The answer is "no", and there is a very obvious reason for the difference: on the one hand, the West is traditionally an ally of Israel, and we might hope that pressure, especially from the USA, if it ever manages to shake off its default unconditional support for Israel, might make Netanyahu think twice about the wisdom of pursuing his present violent course; on the other hand, no amount of protest in Western capitals is going to persuade Putin to change course. It would be a meaningless exercise, except perhaps as an expression of solidarity with Ukraine. The current protests are not so much about solidarity with Palestinians as an attempt to bring pressure to bear on the government to register its revulsion at the war crimes committed in the pursuit of self-defence. |
