Tomorrow belongs to Anna, maybe. It'll be interesting to know if the Russian's were aware of propensity of so many people in the west to adopt their story lines when they set up their disinformation efforts. They probably did as they are the originator of the concept of the 'useful idiot'. Although it is infuriating to see Anna peddle these lies, pity is probably the most appropriate response as I don't think she is doing this out of having a properly formed opinion on Eastern Europe but is motivated by the isolation that would result if she wasn't being provocative. The impact of this kind of activity can be overstated. It hasn't broken through at all in the UK where support for Ukraine is almost universal. In the more conspiracy prone US I don't believe it has either. The Republicans are resisting support for Ukraine because they see a victory for them would deliver a decisive ratings boost for Biden not because they believe Russian talking points. Assuming the next president is a Republican, even if it is Trump, a Ukrainian victory becomes a vote winner not a vote loser and support should resume once he realises he can't sort the issue out in 24 hours. |
