A referendum was held at the time of the split of Ukraine from the Soviet Union with over 80% of Crimeans voting in favour. Who knows what the vote would be now but it would be wrong to assume Russian speaking means pro-Russia (it's a bit like saying an Irish person who doesn't speak gaelic is likely to be pro-English). There appears to be a very effective partisan movement in the area and the accuracy of Ukrainian missle strikes does indicate local help. Assuming it is retaken by Ukraine and the internationally recognised borders are restored, there may be a substantial minority who wish to remain associated with Russia but there are broader issues to consider such as the rights of displaced Crimean tartars. |
