There has been a trend against a large standing army in the UK ever since our last military coup, led by Oliver Cromwell, the UK's only military dictator. That is why we were caught napping without enough soldiers in both 1914 and 1939. In the old days having the world's strongest navy was enough to keep our islands safe from invasion, and the sailors were generally far enough away not to be a coup risk. |
