| While not listening to experts like Mike Preece has got us into the mess we are currently in I'm not sure that the next Flower market will be cancelled or that I think it should. It enjoys cross party political support and the organisers seem to have convinced the council leader in particular that it is a good thing. Mistakes were clearly made with the first market but the organisers are generally new to this and it was probably inexperience rather than incompetence that led to things going wrong. They were mainly a victim of their own success with the numbers attending surpassing most expectations. The good weather and the lack of much else to do in London probably boosted the crowds. It was perhaps hubristic to have promoted the first event so widely and a soft opening with limited publicity would have been the way to go but that has only become clear in retrospect. For the next market I see no reason why it shouldn't go ahead if other similar events are being allowed. Presumably any licensing is dependent on Covid secure arrangements being in place and, if the organisers have satisfied the council that they have learnt lessons from the launch, then this will probably be granted. |
