That's jumping the gun imo. We are a much bigger player than Norway and in international capitalism the end justifies the means. Disraeli was correct when he said words to the affect that Britain does not have friends but it has interests. That applies to all countries who wish to trade with any other country. An open immigration policy may work for Norway, but there is a growing feeling( imo) that it does not work for us as well as it could. People want to come here more than most countries in Europe because there are jobs here and generous benefits, but whilst we have Brits on the dole it seems like a arse about face way of solving the problem. I wonder how many British plumbers or builders there are in Poland, for example (or how many Polish one's left for that matter!)and before anyone mentions British builders goint to Germany in the 80's..there weren't anywhere near the number of Brits went to Germany to find work in the 80's and I don't think they had in work benefits in those days. |
