| Having experienced first hand last night a ‘Cycle Superhighway’, and trying to cross it as a pedestrian, it was a very unpleasant and frankly dangerous experience. The place in question was along the Embankment by Embankment Tube station. Having crossed the (traffic) road, one perches on a narrow strip of pavement to take one’s chance trying to cross the cycle track. Not a comfortable experience with cars moving right behind and cyclists going in both directions at fast speeds in front of you. It was 5.45pm so getting dark and also busy. I had to walk along the cycle track for a short distance (keeping well to the left) as the pavement was blocked. The abuse I got from a couple of cyclists was absolutely appalling (one shouted loudly ‘lost you f..ing way have you!’). The other frightening thing is the extremely fast speeds they are cycling at. It’s not an understatement to say 20mph is the norm. Then you get the odd one going faster than this and overtaking. About four feet away you have cyclists going in the opposite direction with potential combined collision speeds of 40mph+. When I reached my destination (The Tattersall Castle). There were a group of Japanese tourists trying to cross the cycle path there but were really struggling to do so. With the fast speeds the bikes were going at and the fact is was in both directions, made it quite a challenge. Not helped by some cyclist not having any lights on. Putting a cycle track like this down a busy shopping High Street is complete madness. I’d be more than happy to meet any of London Cycling Campaign contributors on this forum at the Embankment, so they can see first hand how totally inappropriate this scheme is. |
