| Dear Michael(London Cycling Campaign Co-ordinator, Hounslow) To go through the various points you have raised. Firstly, I did use the pelican crossing and crossed the road part without difficulty. Crossing the cycle track, even if the lights are on red for the cyclist, given the propensity of cyclist who go through red lights(and I did see a quite a few on that route last night), is a challenge whatever you say, and survival instinct tells you to wait until there are no cyclists coming. The problem with bikes is that you don’t hear them coming, and when they don’t have their lights on as well you don’t always see them. I had to walk along the cycle lane for a short distance as the pavement had been closed off. To say I should try it on the A4 is a rather bizarre comment to make and not relevant. Regarding the speed, I did qualify my comments by indicating it was in the rush hour, and generally during that time cyclist do want to get from A to B as quickly as possible. I can assure you that when I was there last night the speeds were in the region of 20mph. However, even going on your ‘extensive measurements of speed using video analysis.’, if 66% ride slower than 15mph then it still means 34% are going faster than 15mph. You also by implication say that 4% exceed 20mph. Given the volume of cyclists along the embankment, that’s still in the region of 400 cyclists a day going faster than 20mph. Not an insignificant number. I also am very glad that you raised technology, and I therefore assume you aware of the popular cycling app Strava, which collects data from cyclists that use it. Michael you want facts. The stretch from Temple to Westminster Bridge which is the part we are talking about the top speeds on the Strava app have shown an AVERAGE speed of 37mph. Just taking the last two days, there were 1,174 Strava users on that stretch. More than 50% of this number averaged speeds of 20mph or above. To actually average a speed you have to do part of the stretch at a faster speed. You don’t seem to believe anything I say so here is the Strava link. https://www.strava.com/segments/807640 I’m not sure why you finish your post with strange comments like ‘car drivers in the 1.5 tonne lumps of metal’, my main concern is for pedestrians and public transport. Both of which will be disproportionately affected by this cycle route. Michael, I think you might benefit from going on an Anger Management Course as some of the comments you have made have been extremely aggressive and personal. I’m very happy to go with you to the Embankment at sit and watch the bikes go by for half an hour, to prove my point. |
