| More complete nonsense from Richard Bryson. There is a pelican crossing directly opposite Embankment station that takes you across the roadway and cycleway lanes. Why didn't he use it? He appears to be complaining that trying to duck through gaps in traffic where there isn't a crossing is more difficult than where there is. What amazing insight...maybe he'd like to try it on his beloved A4 and see how he gets on. Mr Bryson also appears to be a human speed detector with his claims about speeds, which are also total rubbish. Of course he could check this for himself by actually cycling along the Embankment and using a GPS app on a smart phone but clearly he sees scientific methods as less reliable than wild-ass guesses. Fortunately, there have been extensive measurements of speeds along there using video analysis and they have shown that 91 per cent of cyclists used the cycle track in preference to the main carriageway, 66 per cent of cyclists ride slower than 15mph and 96 per cent cycle at under 20mph. If only car drivers kept to these speeds with their 1.5 tonne lumps of metal. Many seem to think their human rights are violated by 20mph limits and measurements I did along a Chiswick residential street showed that over 80% exceeded the 20mph limit anyway (these were measurements using proper equipment, not pulling numbers our of his posterior like Mr Bryson) The other relevant points about the embankment is at the peak, the cycle track carries more people than the other 3 lanes of traffic put together and pollution has dropped since its construction. However Mr Bryson doesn't appear to think that more people, fewer metal boxes and less pollution along Chiswick High Road is a good thing. |
