| Strava is where the racers track themselves, and try to beat their best times on a segment. That is not a balanced representation of the cyclists in London. A lot of them will be the full lycra outfit on a £2000 carbon fibre bike types. They aren't the typical commuter. The very high speeds are also unlikely to be at 5:45pm, because it is just too busy along there. They will get slowed down by other cyclists. Having said that, when I used to cycle into London every day, I'd estimate my cruising speed on the flat was around 20mph. If you are fit and on a road bike, it's easy to maintain those types of speeds without racing. To get much above 20mph takes a huge effort though. Wiind resistance (which is by far the biggest force on a cyclist at any speed) goes up with the square of speed. The effort required to overcome it at 25mph is 56% higher than the effort required at 20mph. |
