I think Alastair has written what I wanted to write but far more eloquently, but just in case Tom needs a bit more convincing. Drug are not dangerous, some have side effects that may cause problems, but they are not dangerous. The misuse of drugs is dangerous, but so are many other things. In the wrong hands a kettle, a candle and glue can be dangerous, do we ban them in case someone misuses them? Or do we educate people how to use them properly so they are not misused? The sale of cigarettes, alcohol and aspirin are restricted, if illegal drugs were legalised there would probably be restrictions on when, where and how they are sold. I would imagine legalised drug use would be similar to car ownership. Some people pass their test when they are 17 and drive everyday of their life, some people decide to never drive. Then you have everyone else in between, those who fail their test and give up, those that only drive at weekends and those who never have their own and always borrow from friends. Tom you have tried to answer a few questions I already have answers to; Are drugs bad for you? Yes, but so are many other things. Should they be available in every shop for everyone? No, there still needs to be restrictions. Will drug use increase? Probably, but then you are going from guesstimate figures to real figures. Having read all the posts I don't think you have answered the only question I wanted answering, Do you think the law should be changed so the money that is currently spent on illegal drugs, is spent the same, but taxed? |
