"Several former presidents of South American states who bear the major brunt of the war on drugs (millions dead) have recently called for radically new approaches." Yes, but these countries are also poverty-stricken and racked with serious corruption, hence they have either given up, or do not have the resources or the structures to even start to deal with it. Also, places like Columbia are the home of the plant from which cocaine is derived, hence they have cultural and historical reasons for growing it, and using it for the creation of recreational drugs. "You seem to be under the illusion that any liberalisation will lead to vastly increased numbers of problem users (abusers), but as I have said before, this has simply not been the case in places where it has been tried." Which countries have legalised the use of hard drugs? Which drugs are you proposing to legalise? Are you talking about, say, merely making drugs such as heroin available to those who have become addicted to them through illegal use, or making drugs such as cocaine and MDMA available commercially to all over 18, in the way alcohol and tobacco already are? |
