Tom I’m getting a bit bored of your going round in circles. This thread is about re-thinking drug laws, not about all-out legalisation. If you must know my own view is that ‘legalisation’ is an unhelpful word in this context. I think what is needed is Regulation. I believe that if the sale of currently illegal drugs was properly regulated with varying outlets depending on the drug in question, eg softer drugs like cannabis rather like in certain US states or in Holland, stronger stuff through more medically supervised outlets. In every case there would need to be controls over quality and strength and proper labelling etc, like with alcohol, tobacco and medicines. This would save a great deal of police and court time and expense, hugely diminish the power of gangs and provide some welcome extra tax for the exchequer. In short, we would have a much better, happier, safer country. I know this is quite unlikely to happen any time soon, and I know the prospect scares the pants off you, but that’s for you to deal with. Good luck. |
