I think you have hit the nail on the head Alastair. “They demand that drugs be kept illegal because they believe the crap they read in the Mail.” Looking at alcohol for a moment it has never been more available and in real terms it has never been cheaper. Yes, this leads to some misuse but for 99.9% of people it is an enjoyable mind altering substance. Why do the prohibitionists feel this model of drug usage would be significantly different for cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine etc? Tom will have us believe that the guaranteed result of an experiment with cocaine is a downward spiral into madness, crime and prostitution. Ironically it is largely the very fact the drug IS illegal that these are possible outcomes. If the drug were legal the anxiety felt by the user would be removed, the price would be affordable and there would be little stigma for a user who ran into problems. If the drugs were legal they could be sold with accurate and trustworthy health warnings rather than the simplistic South Park mantra “Drugs are bad, don’t do drugs” we get now. I felt sorry for, the unfortunately monikered, Prof Nutt who pointed out a lot of this stuff and then got sacked by Labour Home Secretary – I suspect for identifying the lack of clothing on the Emperor of drug policy. It’s all very 1984 but drugs are one of the establishment’s fearsome beasts we all need to come together to combat along with Islamic Terrorists & Paedophiles – I don’t think they will ever be legalised. |
