| And if we want to make sure that our MPs are elected by the majority of people then say YES to AV (couldn't resist). AV means: There is no longer any need to vote tactically. We are less likely to get the parties no one likes. AV does not mean: More hung parliaments - it's no more likely than under first past the post. Unpopular parties in a constituency will do better - the exact oposite is true. So if the Lib Dems are unpopular they won't do better. AV is not complicated! It's how X factor was voted for, how we got our Mayor and if you want you can vote exactly how you did before! Vote for one party and one party only if you want and If everyone does that it'd still be first past the post! You vote for the candidate you want in order of preference. You can vote for 1 or as many candidates are there are on the ballet paper. The count then goes through as many rounds as it takes for on candiate to get over 50% of the votes. Each round the candidate with the least votes is removed and the next choices of the people who voted for that candidate are then added onto the totals until someone wins. Ever gone through a pile of CVs or picked a holiday form many different choices? AV is a natural system for picking between many different options with many different people involved. First past the post means that the biggest minority can win, rather than a true democratic consensus. |
