| "An estimated 2.2 billion tuned in worldwide, compared to only 750 million for the 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana." I'm amazed at how many times of seen this 2.2bn figure quoted without anyone questioning its absurdity. One in three on the planet? The US apparently (according to a US website reporting on viewing figures) drew 23m. So, a combined 50m in UK and US, where did the other 2.1bn come from? I can understand significant numbers in the commonwealth tuning in, maybe the entire population of India tuned in, that would get us to around 1.2bn in total...i doubt great swathes of Europe were that interested, it was a working day anyway. China maybe? Bangladesh? Indonesia? Really? I'm amazed they got viewing figures by Saturday morning! Perhaps they include everyone who might have caught part of a news bulletin globally. The Beijing Olympic opening ceremony attracted an estimated 1bn viewers globally (per same website), so 2.2bn for the royal wedding sounds like a figure plucked out of thin air if ever there was one. |
