The use of "landmark site" for what is a very busy roundabout and flyover location however dressed up as per the comments to date reflects that this is largely about getting erected an easily seen from a distance feature to host advertising, any accommodation content being marginal. As the Vienna and US photos earlier show you can build memorable eye catching structures without advertising having to feature at all and the love of glass currently in a lot of new buildings seems to be the latest version of the 60s love of concrete by architects. Many visitors to London from my experience when arriving from the Heathrow direction rarely comment on the tall buildings close by as you enter on the 2 lane section flyover section of the M4; occasionally comment on the Ark at Hammersmith, but all who see it always comment on the domes of the Chiswick Russian Church. Maybe we should just bite the bullet and build the architect's 21st century model of a minaret? |
