Who cares what it's for? It looks terrific, and Chiswick needs this sort of architecture if we are to face the competition against Beiijing and Dubai. Everyone who's against it are the same old fuddy-duddies who wish only to continue to stamp old-fashioned imbecilic architecture such as Chiswick House on us. Who wants a run-of-the-mill traditional box of bricks and stone, built for the needs of people living in the Dark Ages? Employing as it does the lightness of plate glass, the superb grace of the steel beam and the shapely delicacy of reinforced concrete, and the vivid colour created by flashing lights, this could be a profound change in the state of our local environment, particularly if it's lit up like a lighthouse all night, and should be welcomed as such. If it isn't, we can always knock it down. So let us celebrate a designer who has thrown his mind open in the search for new frontiers, and who is creating a structure that is ours spiritually and materially, in which our tumult can rage without seeming a grotesque anachronism. Let us hope, too, that they can incorporate a Tesco Express and a betting shop on the 520th floor of the building, too. |
