| In your desperation to see this as a party political issue you are misunderstanding what is going on here. Russell is right to identify the Prime Minister as the originator of these policies and, if by some miracle, a Conservative administration was elected in Hounslow it would face the same dilemma that Labour does, made more acute by the fact that it would have to resist a policy of its own government. The voting in the mayoral elections show that there has been no major swing against Labour in the local area since the Streetspace policies were introduced. In fact if the pattern was duplicated next May Chiswick could end up with some Labour councillors. This is far from an endorsement of Streetspace as the trend is the same in areas demographically similar to Chiswick with the Conservative vote collapsing. Streetspace doesn't seem to have much impact probably because despite all the sound and fury on here most people's lives are unaffected and for those that are negatively impacted a good proportion understand that both Labour and Conservative parties share responsibility for what is going on. If you want these policies to stop what you need to do is tell your local councillors to stop complaining to the local Labour administration who will do nothing as they are quite happy with a policy which brings in large amounts of money at the expense of people who didn't vote for them. You need to tell them to start loudly and clearly demanding that Andrew Gilligan will be sacked. Only then will some sanity be restored to transport policy in the borough. |
