| Worse than that. The council is turning Dukes Meadows into a car, coach and lorry park, with free parking Monday to Friday. It knows that coaches and lorries use the park as a free waiting up area after dropping people elsewhere in London. Around three years ago on a site visit with an officer from LBH transport, there were three coaches parked in the bays behind the band stand, two had no driver with them, presumably stretching their legs. The third told us he had dropped passengers at the Science Museum and was waiting to back to pick them up. One coach driver I spoke to had dropped passengers at Chiswick House. Lorries and other commercial vehicles use it as a lunch / break stop off. Commuters use it as free parking. All these heavy vehicles emitting diesel fumes rumble through a public park across Staveley and Alexandra Gardens. The tunnel closure sends all Virgin Active traffic along Riverside Drive across Staveley and Alexandra Gardens. Children from Staveley Gardens have to cross Riverside Drive to get to school. The council's own surveying showed that the biggest displacement of traffic from Dan Mason Drive to Riverside Drive would be between 8 and 9, when children would be crossing to go to school. All requests to meet to discuss concerns denied. Appalling treatment of the only area in south Chiswick that has mainly social housing. Presumably relying on this area not having the means to make a legal challenge. And, in contrast to other areas, no support from local councillors, as one is a sponsor and cheerleader of the sports development that is the only thing the council cares about and is willing to inflict more cars on local residents to accommodate. Shameful really. |
