| I think the reason we have done relatively badly with death rates from COVID are because the UK is different from most other European Countries. And we have had some bad luck. We are different because we are more urban with bigger cities (in general) - more multicultural and more interconnected with the rest of the world. The uk, London, is a travel hub. So when comparing other European countries it is like comparing apples with pears. We have had bad luck because when this all started and before we knew much about the Virus two things happened. Apparently over a thousand virus hotspots were seeded throughout the country by returning family members from Northern Italy after Christmas last year. And the decision by who I don’t know to return patients untested back to nursing homes. And lastly to top it all we have this new variant which is much more transmittable and maybe more deadly. I don’t think you can blame the government for all of this - l think in the circumstances they have had a hard job in balancing all the competing issues of safety, liberty, livelihood, mental health, education and wellbeing. |
