| HB-T > "If you're counting that as a win your expectations of buccaneering global Britain (TM) must be abysmally low." Here is what Dr Richard North, veteran anti-EU campaigner, had to say to someone claiming that the Nissan statement "... is rightly being treated as one in the eye for the perennial doomsters." Quote: As such, it is being completely misinterpreted. The Nissan experience is the very antithesis of free trade - a highly subsidised business, hedged by protectionist regulation (ROO), with a rigged home market, and kept in regulatory alignment with the EU so that, to all intents and purposes, it remains within the Single Market. As such, Nissan enjoys its own version of the Efta/EEA solution which we wanted to apply more generally and, had it been more widely applied, we would not be having many of the problems we're currently experiencing. Far from being "one in the eye" for that you characterise as the "perennial doomsters", therefore, it vindicates those who warned (and continue to warn) that without the continued regulatory alignment brought about by membership of the Single Market, British business would find it very hard going. That the car industry has been given special treatment precisely proves that point. Source: http://disq.us/p/2emxggw |
