| I really don't see why everyone's getting so excited. This is a contractual matter between the EU & AstraZeneca. One of the very few things Johnson has got right in recent times is to stay the hell out of it. He is, for once, showing admirable restraint, long may it last. I, like everyone else on here have no clue about what the contract does, or does not say with regard to supply. One indication though is the amount of public moaning & bitching the EU are doing right now. That is the response of someone in a weak position, if they had a watertight contract there'd be nothing to talk about (see also our government grandstanding for the press throughout the brexit negotiations unlike the EU who quietly & competently got on with taking them to the cleaners). My take is that in this instance the EU were somewhat high on their own supply & just didn't move quick enough, either through complacency or arrogance, doesn't really matter. I am sure it'll get sorted out. We however have a vast oversupply of vaccine, some 367 million doses on order, if we wanted to leverage our position we could make a show of potentially forking over a few million of those in exchange for something worthwhile, or, if we wanted to be properly Machiavellian, we could say we could hand over some for free if any EU member state wanted to grant emergency authorisation. |
