According to the Brentford site a 9 storey car park is going to be built in their town centre. The normally car hostile Hounslow Council seems to have made parking provision a condition of giving planning permission for a major development there. At the moment very few people would consider a shopping trip to Brentford but with the main drag being completely redesigned, a new arts centre and cinema to be build and a big increase in the local population, over the next few years it might become a bit of an attraction particularly if you can park. Planners might be sincere in their belief that people can be encouraged to switch from using the car to sustainable modes of transport in Chiswick but the aim is undermined somewhat if the same borough is facilitating parking for shoppers in an adjacent town. Westfield to the east has already made a dent in sales and now if their is similar competition from the west the future for Chiswick retail starts to look even more bleak. |
